How do we perceive our bodies when we move? How does our perception change when our surroundings change? How do other moving bodies influence our own choices, rhythms, and sensations? This hour-long, site-specific workshop will aim to extend our movement experience beyond our own skin, bones, and muscles, to encompass how the body’s senses of proprioception, kinesthesia, balance, pulse, and touch can establish a type of moving togetherness.

In this workshop participants will be guided through a playful encounter focusing the attention to their movements, the impact of attraction to others, and entrainment to the rhythms they perceive. Robert Shusterman’s theory of “somaesthetics” serves as a starting point to physically reflect on the compelling link between our movements, thoughts, and feelings. Participants will explore moving as a dynamic community and observe what information stimulates a change in the quality of theirmovements, and their individual rhythms. How do we respond to collective energy, and how do we take part in a common groove on common grounds?

The workshop will beheld in German and English.

About city moves

city moves is a workshop series in various urban locations. It is an outdoor celebration of the Tanzkongress with the citizens of Mainz in all weathers. The dance workshops will be led by local dancers from the Rhine-Main area and by international guests of the Tanzkongress. Proceeding from the themes, questions and choreographic approaches of their own practice, the invited artists create movement formats that bring experienced dancers and dance enthusiasts together in public space.

The city moves begin a few weeks before the Tanzkongress, and will be led by dancers of tanzmainz and the Staatstheater Mainz dance educator, Marina Grün. city moves takes place every day during the Tanzkongress. The workshop series is divided into city moves for children and city moves for all. It is free of charge for all participants.
