In this workshop we will address the impact of the pandemic in the perceived sense of well-being and mental health in the dance community. The pandemic has dramatically disrupted the work of dancers and heightened inequality, uncertainty and financial hardship in an unprecedented way. Changes to daily routines and working practices, coupled together with the precarious working conditions of most dancers, can be both physically and emotionally draining. Although the short-term effects of lockdown measures have been widely discussed (e.g. stress, loneliness, anxiety, depression), there seem to be few resources available to access professional help within the dance scene and few spaces of discussion around the challenges concerning professional identities and careers of dance artists. With this session, we hope to bring awareness to the importance of starting a more consistent discussion on mental health and to highlight the need for advocating for intervention and support programs.

We will take a physical and embodied approach to these issues and explore different tools and coping strategies for emotional and physical regulation. During the session we will also address collective necessities and vulnerabilities that have been exacerbated by the lockdown and societal changes around Covid-19, such as sense of loss and grief, lack of aspirations and self-fulfilment, difficulty in maintaining skills and practice, lack of motivation and focus, changes in support and social networks.
