Turf Talk: Compatibility of Parenthood and Performance
In regard to the compatibility of family and career, dance and theatre in particular have a lot to catch up with. Rehearsal schedules are often incompatible with families, so professionals with children are confronted with the almost unsolvable problem of balancing the amount of work and rehearsals, on top ofthe needs of their families; particularly for women In the independant dance scene it is also not easy. Apart from the precarious financial conditions, working locations and production teams are continually changing. Travel is a precondition for residencies, commissions and guest performances. Therefore, parenthood frequently leads to career abandonment or change.
We would like to extend the questions formulated by Artist Parents (www.artist-parents.com) in their 2021 manifesto to all the occupations and professions involved in the artistic field of dance.
What instruments are required for professional environments to be able to work well in a family-friendly way? What can politics and local authorities do? What must the theatres change? What good approaches are already out there? We will begin with a moderated ‘turf talk’ – Rasengespräch, an eye-level discussion format developed by the guts company – to gain a shared overview. Recommendations for action will be developed in three small cooperative working groups. We aim for an open, respectful, inclusive discussion. The intention is to develop concrete problem-solving suggestions and to assist politicians, local authorities and the arts scene. This work will be continued on Saturday at the parenthood meeting place in the foyer of the Staatstheater Mainz.
This event has been included in the programme through the Open Call.
