Urban Dance Utopia is an exploration of urban dance in the context of contemporary choreography from both practical and theoretical perspectives. Dancers in all styles are invited to an open session in a public space to jam together and exchange. The focus is on the community idea of urban dance culture and the personal relationships and learning strategies associated with it. Various connections to contemporary choreography are examined through a reflection on scene-typical rituals and formats like soul train, cypher and battle. An open space will additionally discuss how urban dance can be more strongly rooted in the theatre. What structures are needed in order to make pieces of urban dance possible? What prejudices do we encounter? What can urban dance mean in relation to diversity and cultural appropriation? How does the regional dance landscape look, and where is there potential for cooperation?

Urban Dance Utopia offers a space to get into conversation, to generate new shared ideas and to develop perspectives and collaborations in urban dance on stage. The open session and open space are enriched by practitioners from the scene – we have invited Frieda Frost, Takao Baba and a local representative.

Participants for Part 1 (Open Space) should also register for Part 2 (Open Session). Previous dance experience for Part 2 is useful, but not essential.
