Opening Out
Over the past two decades there has been a process of rethinking and restructuring within the state and municipal theatres in Germany that is impossible to overlook. Contemporary aesthetics and hybrid production formats are increasingly entering the repertoires. The sometimes all-powerful position of ‘Ballet Director’ in some theatres is being replaced by a curatorial directorship. Choreographers are no longer the autocrats here, and the position of the ensemble is stronger. The curatorial model has been adopted for longer in cities such as Mainz and Bremen, and they have recently been joined by other theatres, i.e. Wiesbaden/Darmstadt, Kassel, Lucerne and Linz. Continually new forms of cooperation go hand-in-hand with a democratisation of artistic processes. This produces considerable challenges for the tried-and-tested institutional routines as well as for the innovative protagonists.
